The shift toward alphanumeric passwords replaces the traditional six-digit PIN, offering a more robust defense against unauthorized account takeovers. By enabling special characters, the app creates a higher barrier for attackers attempting to brute-force security codes. This update complements the existing passkey system introduced in 2024, which leverages biometric authentication like Face ID or fingerprint scanning to eliminate reliance on static, phishable passwords.

Beyond account protection, WhatsApp is refining its call interface for Android users. When receiving calls from unknown numbers, the app now surfaces contextual data, such as the caller’s country of origin and any mutual groups shared between the parties. These additions follow a series of recent platform changes, including the introduction of usernames to mask personal phone numbers and a premium subscription tier offering extended profile customization and advanced analytics.
