SpaceX to build $100B Starship spaceport in Louisiana

The site, situated west of New Orleans, serves as the culmination of a seven-year search for expansion space. While SpaceX targets a 2029 launch date for its first Louisiana-based mission, Louisiana Economic Development offers a more cautious outlook, projecting initial operations to begin in 2030. The facility is designed to be a self-sustaining hub, featuring onsite power generation, propellant production, and deep-water shipping access.

This expansion arrives as SpaceX faces mounting pressure to prove Starship’s viability. With 13 test flights completed since 2023, the company has yet to master the rapid refurbishment and landing of both the booster and upper stage—a requirement for Elon Musk’s plan to eventually retire the Falcon rocket fleet. Beyond flight operations, the new site is expected to generate 3,000 direct jobs, though it will likely face scrutiny regarding safety and environmental impact. The Texas Starbase, while a hub of innovation, has recorded hundreds of injuries and faced intense criticism over its effects on the surrounding ecosystem. SpaceX claims it is proactively working with Louisiana state agencies to mitigate potential damage to coastal wetlands and wildlife habitats.
