Robotics startup Generalist hits $3 billion valuation

Founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng alongside Boston Dynamics veteran Andrew Barry, the company remains focused on creating AI foundation models for robotic hardware. Their recently unveiled Gen 1.5 model allows machines to learn new physical tasks from video demonstrations lasting just 3 to 12 seconds. The startup is currently refining these capabilities through pilot programs with a select group of industrial customers.

Generalist faces a crowded field of well-funded competitors, including Physical Intelligence and Skild AI, both of which command significantly higher market valuations. Investors are betting on a potential breakthrough in general-purpose robotics, hoping for a definitive inflection point similar to the rise of large language models. Skeptics, however, point out that physical limitations hinder the ability to train robots on vast internet-scale datasets, suggesting that truly autonomous, multi-purpose machines may require years of further development.
