Barret Zoph jumps to Google in latest AI executive shuffle

Zoph’s career path has been characterized by rapid movement between the industry’s most prominent labs. After co-founding the startup Thinking Machines with former OpenAI executive Mira Murati, Zoph briefly returned to OpenAI in January alongside co-founder Luke Metz. His tenure there proved fleeting, adding to a pattern of instability that has defined the organization over the last year.

OpenAI faces a mounting trend of leadership turnover as it prepares for a potential IPO. The exodus of key personnel, ranging from chief operating officers to data center specialists, has sparked industry-wide speculation regarding the company’s internal culture. Google, meanwhile, aims to leverage Zoph’s specialized background in reinforcement learning and post-training to bolster the development of its Gemini models.
