The patient, who participated in the first clinical trial of the Connexus system, received the implant—which features over 400 electrodes—at University of Michigan Health this past June. Unlike previous iterations of brain-computer interfaces that relied on cumbersome physical cords, this device functions wirelessly, allowing the user to communicate spontaneously even during phone calls. The system identifies brain activity linked to intended speech, functioning effectively whether the patient attempts to speak aloud or merely imagines the words.
Paradromics CEO Matt Angle noted that the technology recognizes phonemes and word representations regardless of whether the user attempts to articulate them or simply processes them mentally. In a recent demonstration, the system successfully translated the woman's labored movements into the clear, synthesized declaration: “Okay, I have a lot to say.” Dr. William Marks, the company’s chief clinical officer, confirmed that the firm plans to expand its nationwide trial to include 10 patients suffering from conditions such as stroke and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. While Dr. Edward Chang of UCSF, who was not involved in the study, described the results as a pivotal step toward clinical reality, the success highlights a growing momentum in neurotechnology aimed at restoring communication for those living with severe paralysis.
