JioHotstar targets Middle East diaspora via Starzplay partnership

The expansion follows JioHotstar’s recent international launches in the U.K., Canada, and Singapore. Unlike those markets, where the platform operates as a standalone service, the MENA strategy relies on a partnership model. Users will access Indian films, reality franchises like “Bigg Boss,” and original programming directly through Starzplay’s existing interface. Reliance is prioritizing the Malayali population by emphasizing Malayalam-language content, alongside Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bangla offerings.

While JioHotstar’s domestic sports portfolio remains restricted to India, the company is leveraging Starzplay’s infrastructure to offer bundled sports packages. Subscribers can access combined content for AED 49.99 per month, or opt for the standard Plus plan at AED 34.99. The move builds on the 2024 merger between Reliance and Disney’s Indian media assets, which created the $8.5 billion joint venture behind the service. Starzplay CEO Maaz Sheikh characterized the integration as a strategic investment, though financial terms remain undisclosed. This move positions JioHotstar to consolidate its footprint in a region where Starzplay already commands 2.3 million subscribers.
