Former CIA Officer Admits to $190 Million Gold and Cash Heist

Rush, a Virginia resident who joined the agency in 2010, leveraged his role within a division focused on espionage hacking tools to bypass internal oversight. By creating a compartmentalized special access program—an operation so sensitive it remains restricted to a handful of officials—he effectively bypassed the agency’s vetting mechanisms. Court documents reveal that Rush acted as his own approving authority, allowing him to authorize expenditures and manipulate defense contracts without external scrutiny for over a year.

The scale of the theft stunned investigators, who discovered a cache of luxury assets, including high-end watches, vehicles, and over $2 million in cash alongside the gold bars. By securing a plea deal, Rush avoids a trial that would have forced the U.S. government to publicly detail how such a massive breach occurred within its most protected intelligence sectors. He is scheduled for sentencing in January 2027 and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
