India Rejects Musk’s Claims of Starlink Market Obstruction

The standoff follows years of friction between SpaceX and India’s telecommunications sector. While Starlink has secured key approvals and established local operations, it has yet to launch commercial services in a market of over one billion subscribers. The Ministry of Communications clarified that Starlink and two other competitors are at a comparable regulatory stage, with security clearances required before spectrum allocation can proceed.

Starlink’s path in India has been marked by previous setbacks, including a 2022 mandate to refund customer preorders after the government flagged the company for operating without proper licensing. Tensions also persist regarding spectrum allocation methods. Although the government eventually favored administrative assignment over auctions—a victory for Starlink—the company still faces competition from local giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Both firms are simultaneously developing their own satellite broadband services while negotiating potential distribution roles for Starlink. Amidst these regulatory hurdles, Starlink vice president Lauren Dreyer recently reaffirmed the company’s intent to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of universal connectivity, even as the specific timeline for a local launch remains undefined.
