An analysis of 96,902 Indeed job postings by career tool Kickresume reveals that 36% of listings have been live for more than a month. The tech sector shows the highest frequency of these long-standing ads at 43%. While not every aging listing is fraudulent, these "ghost jobs"—positions companies have no immediate intention to fill—are frequently used to collect resumes for future needs, test market salary expectations, or create a false impression of corporate growth for investors.
Peter Duris, CEO of Kickresume, notes that while exact duplicate reposts and suspicious "urgent hiring" tags without deadlines are rare, the sheer volume of stale listings remains a significant hurdle. Companies may also keep listings active due to bureaucratic inertia or as a formality when an internal hire has already been selected. To verify a role’s validity, experts suggest checking the employer's official careers page or contacting the hiring manager directly. If a listing is absent from the company's own site, it serves as a primary indicator that your time is better spent elsewhere.
