OpenAI employee charged after planting hidden recorder in boardroom

The device, which federal prosecutors describe as a tool for intercepting oral communications, was discovered on October 9. OpenAI utilized its own internal AI models to analyze the hardware, identifying it as a sophisticated unit equipped with advanced encryption and remote data transfer capabilities. While the company confirmed the device was capable of monitoring audio, they stated that an initial investigation shows no evidence that proprietary model weights, source code, or sensitive customer data were compromised.

Prosecutors allege that Alfozan was caught on internal security footage while attempting to access the area behind the television where the device was installed. FBI Director Kash Patel characterized the incident as a targeted effort to intercept private discussions regarding the company’s super-intelligence technology. Alfozan, a Saudi national who began working at OpenAI in July 2025, now faces a potential five-year prison sentence. Neither the defendant nor his legal counsel has provided a statement regarding the charges.
