Rivian Shifts to Mass Market With R2 SUV Deliveries

The R2 arrives with a starting price of roughly $58,000, effectively scaling down the design of the larger R1 into a more accessible package. Rivian intends to expand its reach further by introducing versions priced below $50,000 and eventually a $45,000 model by 2027. Production is currently underway at the company’s facility in Normal, Illinois, with a secondary plant in Georgia scheduled to come online in 2028.

Scaling production remains the primary hurdle for the automaker. Rivian aims to deliver between 20,000 and 25,000 units by year-end, which would rank the R2 among the fastest-scaling electric vehicle launches in American history. This push comes at a challenging time for the domestic EV sector, as legacy competitors retreat from electrification amid the repeal of federal tax credits and a softening domestic market. Despite these headwinds, Scaringe maintains that the reduced competition provides a strategic opening for the R2 to capture market share.

The vehicle is also central to Rivian’s software-defined future. The company plans to integrate advanced autonomous capabilities into the platform, bolstered by a significant partnership with Uber. That deal, valued at up to $1.25 billion, positions up to 40,000 R2 models to eventually join the ride-hailing giant’s network as autonomous robotaxis.
