Mobileye Shifts Strategy with 2027 U.S. Robotaxi Launch

For years, the Israeli-based firm defined itself by supplying computer vision chips and advanced driver assistance systems to global automakers. By launching a proprietary service, Mobileye intends to harness its Moovit ride-hailing app to manage the consumer-facing side of the business. While the specific city for the rollout remains undisclosed, the company confirmed it will utilize "AV-ready" platforms, with promotional materials hinting at the use of modified Great Wall Motors electric crossovers.

Founder and CEO Amnon Shashua frames this move as an evolution rather than a departure from existing partnerships. He maintains that operating a fleet provides essential direct experience, allowing the company to showcase the full capabilities of its self-driving software, Mobileye Drive. The company expects this dual approach to accelerate the adoption of autonomous technology, even as it forces the supplier to balance its identity as both a vendor to manufacturers like Volkswagen and a direct challenger in the ride-hailing market.
