The Road to Autonomy Index updates every 12 hours, pulling from global public databases, SEC filings, and government reports to evaluate operational scale, revenue, and safety. According to co-founder Rob Grant, the system relies exclusively on public or licensed data rather than web scraping. The results highlight a shift in the sector, with Chinese firms Pony.ai and WeRide joining Baidu in the upper ranks, while Tesla currently sits in fifth position.
State-level data underscores the rapid expansion of these fleets. In Texas, Waymo increased its registered autonomous vehicle count to 620 by late May, while Tesla saw a 64% jump to 69 vehicles. Despite this growth, commercial deployment remains uneven; for instance, Zoox continues to test in the state but lacks the federal exemptions required to charge passengers for rides. As these companies scale, they face ongoing regulatory and technical hurdles, ranging from Waymo’s recent recall over highway construction navigation to high-profile collisions involving firms like Avride.
