Sony to End Physical PlayStation Game Sales by 2028

Digital downloads currently represent roughly 80% of Sony’s full-game software revenue, signaling a clear shift in consumer behavior that the company is now formalizing. While the remaining 20% of the market relies on discs for resale value, personal collections, or limited connectivity, these physical formats will no longer be supported for new releases. This transition forces a major pivot for major retailers like GameStop and Best Buy, which have long maintained physical shelf space for gaming media.

For many, this marks the final chapter for game stores and the practice of trading titles with friends. While existing libraries remain functional, the market for physical media will shift into a specialized niche. Much like the vinyl revival in the music industry, pre-2028 titles are expected to see an increase in value among collectors, as they become the final tangible artifacts of the disc-based era.
