Musk's Ambition for a Post-Smartphone Future

The device reportedly relies on a proprietary operating system, a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, and deep integration with the xAI division's Grok. If realized, this hardware would serve as the physical vessel for Musk’s long-standing "everything app" vision, consolidating messaging, payments, and AI assistance into a closed ecosystem. By tethering such a device to Starlink’s global connectivity, Musk could theoretically achieve a consumer stack entirely independent of Apple and Google.

SpaceX maintains that the project remains in its infancy, noting that designs are fluid and a commercial release is not guaranteed. Musk has explicitly labeled the Wall Street Journal report as false, yet the industry momentum suggests otherwise. With OpenAI and former Apple design chief Jony Ive collaborating on their own AI-focused hardware, the race to define the post-smartphone era has moved from theoretical speculation into active development.
