Jagadish Thota and the Evolution of Jagadeesh Marine Exports

Jagadish Thota and the Evolution of Jagadeesh Marine Exports

Thota’s trajectory began with a departure from his original engineering career plans. Rather than heading to the United States for an MBA, he followed his father’s advice to build a domestic business. He bypassed the industry standard of retrofitting old theaters into processing plants, opting instead to build a purpose-built, EU-approved facility. This early infrastructure investment proved critical as global demand for affordable protein surged.

Today, the company is scaling rapidly, recording 50 percent volume growth last year with another 30 percent projected for this year. To navigate narrowing margins, Thota is focusing on a circular economy model. By investing in R&D, the facility now converts processing waste into high-value applications like protein concentrates and astaxanthin-rich oils. He views this as a dual necessity: it fulfills environmental responsibility while creating essential new revenue streams.

Efficiency remains a primary hurdle. Thota acknowledges that while his workforce is loyal, productivity lags behind global competitors. He advocates for a measured integration of automation—designed to boost output rather than replace staff—to maintain a competitive edge. This strategy extends to his supply chain, where he has bypassed intermediaries to work directly with 150 local farms. By providing these farmers with financial support during early crop cycles, the company ensures supply stability and full traceability. Looking ahead, Thota is eyeing the domestic Indian market, betting that improvements in the national cold chain will soon make seafood as accessible within India as it is abroad.
