Volkswagen’s Mission Efficiency Prototype Hits 279 MPGe

The prototype achieved an efficiency of 7.51 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, arriving in Vienna with 104 miles of range remaining. This performance stems from a drag coefficient of 0.158 and a specialized Kammback roofline, significantly outperforming the Lucid Air Pure, currently the world’s most efficient production vehicle. While the car utilizes a 54.9-kilowatt-hour battery, its real-world range capability suggests it could travel over 400 miles on a single charge.

Design compromises were necessary to reach these figures. The rear seating is restricted to passengers under 5-foot-3, and the tight wheel arches prioritize aerodynamics over ride comfort. Inside, the cabin favors minimalism, borrowing a concept from startup Slate Auto by omitting a traditional infotainment system in favor of a portable Bluetooth speaker. Despite adding solar cells to the roof and trunk to provide an extra 18 miles of range under ideal conditions, Volkswagen has not confirmed a production timeline. However, the company’s history with the limited-run XL1 suggests these experiments often serve as high-end benchmarks for future engineering.
