Known as Smart—an acronym for Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories—the software acts as a predictive layer over existing management infrastructure. Developed by the firm Air Space Intelligence, the system processes variables ranging from shifting weather patterns and airport capacity to airline schedules and airspace constraints. By identifying potential traffic conflicts in advance, the FAA hopes to streamline workflows that have become increasingly strained under current staffing levels.
The 12-year contract marks a significant shift toward automated oversight, with the initial rollout scheduled for the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. This move complements the agency’s broader modernization agenda and a recent hiring initiative aimed at addressing the acute personnel gaps that have plagued the sector for years.
