Apple Pay Enters Indian Market via Axis Bank Partnership

The debut will be restricted, supporting only select Axis Bank credit cards via Visa and Mastercard, while excluding the local RuPay network. Expansion remains hampered by commercial friction, as Apple reportedly demands a fee of 20 basis points per transaction. This figure cuts deeply into the 40 to 50 basis point margins typical of the Indian payments sector, leading major institutions like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and SBI Card to hold off on integration during ongoing negotiations.

Unlike the ubiquitous UPI system, which facilitates direct bank-to-bank transfers through QR codes, Apple Pay relies on traditional card infrastructure. This dependency creates potential technical inconsistencies, where acceptance may vary depending on the specific payment terminal's acquiring bank. Despite these hurdles, the service targets India's expanding demographic of affluent iPhone users. For Apple, the launch serves as a strategic play to monetize its growing user base in a country where it accounted for 28% of the smartphone market by value in 2025.
