Tinder moves beyond one-on-one dating with Group Hangouts

Users initiate the process by selecting a shared activity and inviting at least two friends to join their party. Once a group hits the three-person minimum, their profile enters the main card stack for discovery. If two groups mutually express interest, a shared chat opens to facilitate planning. Tinder has incorporated specific safety controls, allowing individuals to exit conversations or report participants without affecting their status within their own friend group.

This initiative builds on the company’s previous experiments, such as the 'Double Date' feature, and complements the recently expanded Events tab, which highlights local gatherings like pottery classes and bowling. Claire Watanabe, VP of product management, noted that the concept was inspired by observing college teams using the app to meet locals while traveling. For Tinder, the pivot is critical: the platform faces a difficult period marked by a 7% decline in monthly active users during the second quarter. By prioritizing social outings, the company is competing directly with rivals like Bumble, which has also introduced group-oriented planning tools to capture a generation tired of endless, solitary scrolling.
