Welch’s recently entered the arena with its Real PB&Js, positioning the product as a 50% larger alternative to existing market leaders. According to Andrew Hartshorn, the company’s chief brand and innovation officer, the move directly addresses consumer demand for more substantial portions. The shift has not gone unnoticed by industry titans, as Kraft Heinz integrated PB&Js into its established Lunchables lineup to defend its territory.
Simultaneously, newcomers are disrupting the space by prioritizing ingredient quality. Jams, launched in 2025, differentiates itself by eliminating seed oils and artificial dyes, even leveraging partnerships with NFL Players Inc. to refine its flavor profiles. This competitive environment has accelerated consolidation, evidenced by JSB Industries’ acquisition of the startup Fave’Wich this past August. As these players vie for shelf space, the once-simple school lunch staple has evolved into a high-stakes battleground for convenience-focused food brands.
