Google brings AI-powered Dreambeans storytelling app to India

The app, which runs on Android and iOS, automates the creation of visual narratives by scraping information from a user’s connected Google services. While initially limited to static imagery, recent updates incorporate Google’s Veo video-generation model to animate select story segments. Product manager Gozde Oznur cited high engagement with Google’s ecosystem in India as the primary driver for the expansion, noting that the country represents a significant opportunity for the platform’s proactive AI approach.

Despite the push, the service faces potential hurdles in the Indian market. While the app supports 13 languages, it cannot yet handle code-switching, a common practice among Indian users who frequently mix languages like Hindi and English. Furthermore, the app’s reliance on deep access to personal data has prompted scrutiny regarding privacy. Google maintains that users retain control over which services connect to the app and can purge their data at will. To mitigate concerns about surfacing sensitive or distressing memories, Google has implemented manual override controls, allowing users to blacklist specific topics or people from their generated content.
