Bezos is backing his outlook with the launch of Prometheus, an AI startup valued at $41 billion. Co-led by former Google executive Vik Bajaj, the firm is developing an "artificial general engineer" designed to streamline the creation of complex hardware, such as jet engines and spacecraft components. The company has already secured $12 billion in funding from major financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock, with 150 staff members spread across San Francisco, London, and Zurich.
Drawing parallels to the invention of the plow and the steam engine, Bezos contends that AI will catalyze wealth by accelerating the "invention loop." He rejects the prevailing anxiety surrounding automation, suggesting instead that the technology will lower the barrier to entry for complex manufacturing. According to Bezos, even if AI reduces the headcount required for specific tasks, the resulting surge in productivity will create significantly more opportunities than it eliminates. The startup is now reportedly in talks to raise an additional $100 billion for a dedicated investment fund to further scale these capabilities.
