The scale of the campaign is staggering. Google reports that the syndicate deployed 9,000 deceptive websites and registered 1 million fraudulent domains to facilitate its phishing infrastructure. In May, Android users flagged 55,000 spam texts in a single fortnight, averaging over two complaints every minute. These messages frequently mimicked Google and other major corporations to harvest passwords and credit card credentials.
To dismantle the network, Google is collaborating with major telecommunications providers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, to block the influx of malicious traffic. The company is also coordinating with the FBI on law enforcement efforts. While Google claims its own AI-powered defensive tools currently intercept 10 billion scam messages monthly, this legal action marks a shift toward directly targeting the infrastructure behind the automated fraud.
