The end of the black box: How social media is handing users the remote

This transition marks a departure from one-size-fits-all curation. By enabling users to explicitly define their interests, platforms hope to boost engagement while addressing long-standing criticisms regarding algorithmic transparency. Meta’s Threads recently introduced the 'Your Algo' feature, which allows users to set temporary preferences for content—such as prioritizing sports or muting news—for up to seven days without the need for public posts. This follows the earlier 'Dear Algo' tool, which relied on public declarations to influence feed behavior.

Instagram has expanded its own 'Your Algorithm' tool, now available across the main feed, Explore, and Reels. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri notes that large language models are central to this change, allowing the app to translate complex ranking data into a format users can actually modify. Meanwhile, TikTok continues to refine its 'Manage Topics' system, which launched in 2024. The platform recently integrated AI-powered Smart Keyword Filters, a feature that goes beyond literal matches to block related content—for instance, filtering out 'renovations' when a user requests to hide 'remodeling' content. These tools reflect a broader industry push to make recommendation systems feel less like a closed loop and more like a user-managed preference set.
