The success of the project is rooted in Fuqua’s deep-seated history with the medium. Long before his transition into feature-length thrillers like Training Day and The Equalizer, the director cut his teeth in the 1990s crafting music videos for icons such as Prince and Stevie Wonder. This background provided a unique technical foundation for navigating the life of the King of Pop, a figure Fuqua has long cited as a pivotal influence on his own creative development. The director even shared a personal connection with the artist, recalling an unsolicited phone call from Jackson years ago to express admiration for his work.

Producer Graham King, who previously steered the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, identified Fuqua early on as the ideal visionary to handle the material. The production’s commitment to authenticity was absolute: Fuqua filmed at the Jackson family compound in Encino and cast Jaafar Jackson, the subject’s nephew, to anchor the narrative. By meticulously recreating iconic stage performances and costumes, the film moved beyond a standard biography to offer what Fuqua described as a spiritual journey. As the production prepares for a sequel, the director is pivoting toward a Netflix project, Hannibal, which will mark his latest collaboration with Denzel Washington.
