Kobo and StoryGraph challenge Amazon's digital reading dominance

For years, Amazon maintained its grip on the digital market by pairing low-cost hardware with the social infrastructure of Goodreads. Rivals struggled to compete because they lacked the deep device integration that allowed Kindles to sync reading data automatically. The new Kobo partnership eliminates this friction, enabling users to mark books as finished on StoryGraph without manual input. The feature is now live for all Kobo account holders across both devices and mobile applications.

Founded in 2019 by Nadia Odunayo and Rob Frelow, StoryGraph has scaled to over 5 million users by focusing on granular analytics—tracking reading moods, pacing, and habit-building streaks. While the basic integration requires no subscription, StoryGraph continues to offer a $5-per-month 'Plus' tier for advanced data visualization and custom filtering. As digital reading grows, with roughly 31% of U.S. adults now consuming ebooks, this collaboration positions Kobo to capture a segment of the audience seeking alternatives to Amazon’s closed environment.
