While Tesla garners headlines with its ambitious Optimus project, Agility is banking on the proven utility of its bipedal robot, Digit. Unlike competitors still in development, Digit is already generating revenue by moving totes and bins for major clients including Amazon, GXO, and Toyota. CEO Peggy Johnson reports that the company has secured $300 million in contract orders, positioning Agility to potentially become the first pure-play humanoid firm to go public via a reverse-merger later this year.
The Fremont site will serve as a specialized training ground where robots master skills in simulated real-world environments. Co-founder Damion Shelton emphasizes a pragmatic approach to autonomy, distinguishing between the creative capabilities of generative AI—used for programming tasks—and the rigid, non-generative systems required for safety-critical functions. This distinction underscores the company's focus on industrial reliability over consumer-facing applications, with plans to unveil a human-sensing version of Digit this fall.
