SpaceX Accelerates Tesla Megapack Spending to Power AI Infrastructure

The scale of these acquisitions marks a sharp increase in capital deployment, with $295 million spent during the second quarter alone. These industrial-grade storage units are essential for managing the erratic energy loads generated by high-performance GPUs, which spike during model training and inference. By smoothing out these power surges, the batteries prevent utility surcharges and reduce reliance on mechanical generators.

This purchasing pattern reinforces the consolidation of Musk’s corporate ecosystem following the integration of xAI into SpaceX. Before the merger, xAI had already invested $430 million in similar storage technology to support its infrastructure. Beyond energy equipment, SpaceX’s filings also revealed a $131 million investment in Tesla Cybertrucks as of December 2025. While xAI continues to utilize natural gas turbines at sites like its Mississippi project, these Tesla-manufactured batteries serve as a vital, high-speed buffer to ensure consistent operational uptime.
