Anthropic’s Revenue Growth Strained by Skyrocketing Compute Costs

The latest S-1 update reveals that compute costs accounted for 58% of revenue in the third quarter, a sharp climb from 48% in the preceding period. While top-line growth remains robust—rising from $11.5 billion to $17 billion—the company’s operating losses have widened in tandem. This efficiency dip is underscored by a decline in revenue per dollar spent on compute, which slid back to 1.72x after briefly cresting the 2x mark earlier this year.

The surge in expenditure stems from a scramble to meet insatiable demand, forcing Anthropic into costly short-term agreements. The company reported $10 billion in quarterly compute bills, with $5 billion tied to premium short-term commitments. To bridge the gap, Anthropic has turned to "neocloud" providers, including Nscale, Akamai, and Volta, while maintaining a significant $1.25 billion monthly contract with SpaceX. These arrangements offer the flexibility needed to scale but come at a significant price premium compared to traditional multi-year hyperscaler contracts.

Management expects infrastructure to remain its primary expense for the foreseeable future. Although the "Anthropic Direct" initiative seeks to establish an internal compute base, the company acknowledges that internal capacity cannot yet keep pace with rapid growth. Investors currently appear willing to overlook these margins given the 50% quarterly revenue growth, yet the reliance on external infrastructure leaves the company exposed to the broader volatility of the data center market and potential shifts in capital availability.
